Back in June, Andy Bissett saw an interview on breakfast television with Stephen Darby, Rob Burrow and Doddie Weir openly chatting about living with Motor Neurone Disease. “Biss”, as he is known to his friends, was already signed up for the Steps 4 Stephen virtual walk at the end of August. So inspired was he that he set himself his own personal challenge. In the 72 days from that day to the August walk, he decided that he would be look to walk 720km and try to raise £1000 for the Darby Rimmer MND Foundation. What happened next was quite phenomenal.
Biss took to the lanes around his home near Holmfirth in West Yorkshire at lunchtime and in the evenings. Sharing his adventures on social media, his friends stepped up in support and helped him with his fundraising. Three pairs of trainers later, he smashed his mileage target. To mark the passing of the 720km marker, Biss walked into Bradford City’s Utilita Energy Stadium with his daughters Tilda and Edith and our own Stephen Darby.
On arrival at the ground, he was able to confirm that he had nearly trebled his fundraising target and has now reached £2700, an amazing achievement. To watch them walk into Bradford City, follow this link.
Biss isn’t finished yet. He is determined to surpass 805km which means he will have completed 500 miles. To mark that achievement, he has obtained a kilt and will be wearing it in the Steps 4 Stephen virtual walk on August 29/30 listening to the Proclaimers “I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles)” song while he walks. Now that should make for some interesting pictures.
